Consider the Application
One thing you should always do when choosing lifting chains is to consider the application. Look at factors such as the load’s shape, the distance between the link and the hook, and the weight of the load itself to determine a suitable lifting chain.
The load’s weight can help you decide how many legs your chain sling should have. For example, some double-leg products can carry loads exceeding 100,000 pounds, while four-leg slings can carry loads beyond 180,000 pounds. This trait makes them perfect for lifting engines or heavy machinery.
Look at the Grade
You can pick the right lifting chain by looking at its grade, which tells you its tensile strength. A strong chain has a high grade. Users should employ chains with grades of 80 or 100 for overhead lifting. Chains with grades of 70 may be too weak for the application.
Ensure They Are Certified
Another tip for choosing the right lifting chain is to ensure it has passed a test proving it is appropriate for lifting. Before purchasing the chain, the manufacturer should be able to provide proof of certification showing that it did not fail the test. If they cannot supply that information, then it is time to move on to a different product.
Examine the Chain
A final step you can take is to examine the chain yourself before using it. You should inspect it for any damage, including rust, corrosion, cracks, or nicks. If you find anything that may compromise the chain’s usefulness and make it a hazard, remove it from use immediately.
