The Best Printers for 110lb Cardstock

March 9, 2022

1l0lb cardstock is used for a variety of purposes. Although most photo printing is done on glossy photo paper, some prefer to print on cardstock for a textured, solid feel. Cardstock can also be used for making craft – invitations, greetings cards and art prints – that look professional and well-finished. However, most printers are unable to deal with thicker stocks. 110lb cardstock (also called 270 gsm) is one of the sturdier papers available, and thus many printers will find it too stiff and thick to fit through the rollers, causing jams and misprints. In this article, we’ve reviewed the five best printers for 110lb cardstock in 2022. These printers are all capable of handling heavier stocks with speed, high print quality, and all the other key factors that influence a user’s choice of machine.

HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dn Wireless Laser Printer

Laser printers differ from inkjet printers in the method of applying ink to the paper: inkjets produce images by saturating the paper with droplets of ink, whereas laser printers apply ink by beaming and melting it onto the surface. This means lasers can cause less bleeding or smudging, however they can offer reduced image quality. The HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dn Wireless Laser Printer is an excellent laser model offering all the strengths of laser, most strikingly a fast print speed of 28ppm in black and colour, including duplex. This means cardstocks will print just as quickly as conventional paper. It also has an exceptionally low cost-per-page due to a long ink life; approximately 1350 sheets black and 1250 sheets colour. The dpi is relatively low, however, at 600 x 600. Connection is possible through WiFi, USB and Ethernet.

Pros

  • Low cost-per-page from long ink life
  • Fast printing speed
  • Automatic double sided printing
  • Laser print technology

Cons

  • Relatively low resolution

Verdict

The HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dn Wireless Laser Printer is the best laser model we surveyed for printing on heavy cardstocks. Lasers are most suitable for printing on non-porous metallic or coated cardstocks, including those with glossy finishes. Being able to reliably handle these stocks really makes this laser option stand out. The low dpi could be an issue when printing photos or images, however if you are focussing on coloured metallic or coated stocks, you’ll likely be printing in monochrome anyway.

Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-1000 Professional Photographic Inkjet Printer

We’re back to Canon again for the next model, the Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-1000 Professional Photographic Inkjet Printer. This also has the Canon signature excellent print quality, with a range of innovative and unique features: anti-clogging technology to generate faster print speeds, an air feeding system that prevents dragging or skewing, and a Lucia Pro 11-Color Plus Chroma Optimiser ink system for denser droplet placement and an extra-wide colour gamut. All these technological advantages will ensure your prints come out perfectly, even on challenging media like heavy cardstock. At the heart of the image PROGRAF PRO-1000 is a 1.28″ wide print head. Expanding the printing area by 50% with each movement of the print head, print speeds are drastically improved. This increases your productivity through efficient high-speed printing. Best of all, this machine offers the largest print size we found, a massive 17” x 22”; this does include a border, however. Also, connection is not available wirelessly, only through an old-fashioned USB cable.

Pros

  • High resolution for excellent quality prints
  • Innovative technological features
  • Extremely large print size

Cons

  • Large and heavy
  • No borderless printing
  • No wireless connectivity

Verdict

The Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-1000 Professional Photographic Inkjet Printer’s name insists on a level of professionalism that is certainly reflected in the price – double or even triple some of the other printers we surveyed. Despite this, if you need to print very large images on cardstock, such as for wall art – and don’t mind losing a couple centimetres cutting off borders – this is the printer for you. You will have to buy your own USB cable to go with it, though.

HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Wireless Printer

The HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Wireless Printer is a great value option for printing cardstock projects at home. Perfect for cards, invitations and photo paper, the OfficeJet is capable of printing on cardstocks up to 110lb, and 145lb photo papers, with minimal smudging even on glossy media. Although it only has two ink cartridges, this machine can still produce a respectable 4800 x 1200 dpi, saving you money on replacing 8-11 individual colours. It also includes a range of multifunctional capabilities that really suit it to daily use: scanning, printing, copying and – for a retro touch – faxing. An auto document feature allows multiple pages to be copied or scanned at one time. The compact footprint means it fits comfortably in a home office, too. The print speed isn’t super fast, at 6ppm in colour or 8.5ppm black, but it does promise to save you money where it doesn’t save time; with an HP Instant Ink subscription, the printer will order more ink monthly to save you up to 70%. Wireless printing is available via smartphones, tablets and PCs.

Pros

  • Budget price and Instant Ink program
  • Handles heavier stocks well
  • Multifunctional (print, scan, copy, fax)
  • Decent resolution for good quality prints

Cons

  • Slow printing speeds
  • Doesn’t work as well with non-HP brand cardstocks

Verdict

The HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Wireless Printer is our top choice for printers on a budget. It produces excellent results despite its modest stats, and won’t bleed you dry on cartridges like a lot of other printers on the market. Although, we did have some struggles with cardstocks not made by the HP brand, maybe due to the methods of cutting. Either way, this reliable little machine will suit you well for home use.

Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 Printer

The Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 Printer has a lot of features in common with other models on our list. Like the Canon imagePROGRAF, it supports wide format, up to 13 x 19”; however, where the Canon failed on borderless printing, the Epson excels. The resolution of 5760 x 1440dpi – delivered via a Claria Photo HD six-colour ink technology system including red and grey – produces sharpness, vividness and depth of colour to rival machines far above its price bracket. The rear 50-sheet speciality media tray is a unique feature, allowing higher-volume cardstock printing without individual feeding, handling weights up to 140lb and thicknesses up to 23ml with ease. It even claims to be 30% smaller than competing wide-format printers, meaning it won’t eat up too much space. On top of all this, it also comes with Amazon Dash Replacement support, meaning you could never run out of ink again; this keeps track of your ink usage and orders more through your Amazon account when you start to run low, a step up from HP’s competing Instant Ink program. Easily print wirelessly from iPad, iPhone and Android tablets and smartphones, plus Ethernet networking for desktop computers.

Pros

  • High resolution for great print quality
  • Amazon Dash Replacement program
  • Small compact design
  • 50-sheet speciality media tray
  • Wide format prints

Cons

  • No third party or refilled cartridges
  • Manual double sided (duplex) printing

Verdict

The Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 Printer is our number one choice for the best overall printer for 110lb cardstock. Combining features from all the other leading models, the Epson Expression beats them all to deliver the best quality, efficiency and accessibility on the market. If you’re looking for a printer that offers the best support for cardstock at a very reasonable price, you’d be making the right choice by opting for this one.
